Professional Portraits vs. Snap Shots.

Usually, I stress to my clients that they would want to use good quality photos for their photo quilts. But does that mean that they should be professional studio portraits? Not necessarily.

I have a number of studio portraits of my children when they were younger and many are among my favorite pictures of them.  I also have hundreds of snap shots and most are photos that are very dear to me.

When is the last time that you looked at a professional portrait and thought to yourself; “wow, that was the best day of my life.” What wonderful memories I have of that day!” Usually that is not the case. At a studio, everything is planned out, every hair is in place, the subject is posed just so. Of course,  after all this fuss, there are some excellent pictures as a result. Pictures that definitely look great on a photo quilt.  And I have used some studio portraits on my own photo quilts. But don’t dismiss the snap shots.

Snap shots are invaluable. They touch our hearts because our emotions are involved. They take us back to that exact moment in time, so we can relive it in our minds and hearts.  They capture the personality and mood, and portray it in an honest way because of it’s candidness.

Here is an examples of a professional portrait and some snap shots that I used in a quilt of my kids when they were younger:

I cherish this studio portrait of my son and daughter.  It is one of my favorites and I have a 16×20 of it hanging on my wall.

Although my son is now 26 years old, this snap shot, takes me back to the moment he was 4 and I’m pushing him on his swing. I can still hear his laughter and feel the warmth of the sun.  His fun, happy personality is all expressed in this photo. It is a special time that I will treasure forever.

And another snap shot of my daughter. We were in California on Venice Beach.  We were about ready to go swimming and my mother took this picture of  her in the sand with her favorite smiley face shirt. It brings out her personality so well, because she always has a smile on her face that can brighten up anyone’s day.

So, good quality photos should be a nice crisp clear picture that are in focus.  But should they be professional portraits? Sure, they work well and look great.

Or should they be snap shots? Most definitely! That’s what makes it a “memory” quilt.
